AI voice agents that match pet products to the dog before the owner checks out

Pet owners buy for an animal you never meet: shih tzus whose yak chews are "not too big and ... not too little," larger dogs that get two four-packs at a time. Six recorded calls for a pet chew store show the agent asking about the dogs, clearing up subscription confusion and getting orders placed, and a Loop Voice agent can make the same calls for your store.

    The short answer

Pet stores use an AI voice agent to call owners who left checkout or just received an order: it asks about the dog and answers what holds the order up, from size and chewing style to subscription or one-time, add-ons such as shipping protection, and price against Amazon. The call library holds six of these calls for one pet chew store, from an owner who didn't want a monthly plan to a subscriber whose shih tzus' chews were the right size. Loop Voice has no published results for pet stores yet; your first month of orders is the baseline.

What makes pet owners pause at checkout

The chew has to suit the dog

A power chewer, a puppy and a senior toy breed need different chews, and owners know it. On recorded calls, Holly confirmed her shih tzus' yak chews were the right size, and Pamela chose flavored over plain for her larger dogs when the agent asked.

    Nobody wants a surprise subscription

"I don't see where it has to be a monthly thing," Lisa told the agent, and it confirmed she was on a one-time purchase. Pamela didn't want a subscription either, and the agent got her to the one-time option. If your checkout leads with subscribe-and-save, expect the question.

    Amazon is one tab away

Some owners check marketplace prices before buying direct. On a recorded call, Ruth came back from Amazon to finish her order, and the last thing in her way was an optional shipping protection add-on, which the agent told her she could turn off.

Last box wrong, next box on hold

A wrong flavor or size puts the next order on hold. On a post-purchase call about a wrong order, the agent arranged Leon's replacement and said it would let support know "it's a blueberry only replacement to the same address."

Calls that fit a pet store

    Call multi-packs, text single bags

Give multi-pack carts the call and leave a lone bag of treats to the text with the checkout link. A cart value branch does the sorting, with a suggested minimum from your results. When a code is in play, the agent spells it letter by letter, "L as in Lima," which is how Maria got hers to apply.

Check the first box, then offer the next

Trigger it when the order is fulfilled and wait until the box has arrived. The agent confirms the order arrived and asks how the dog took to it before offering anything, and texts the buying link only after a yes. Holly's and Leon's calls come from this flow.

    Save the renewal that bounced

Failed-payment events don't reach Loop Voice from store platforms yet, so you supply the list: a segment in Shopify or Klaviyo, an uploaded CSV, or an event from your subscription app through Zapier. The agent texts the card-update link from your customer portal and never takes card details itself.

Call owners whose reorder is late

Point a campaign at customers past their usual reorder gap; a Shopify or Klaviyo segment can find them. Before mentioning anything new, the agent asks how the dog did with the last chews.

Real call · Post-purchase upsellSubscription confirmed with 10% off a future order
Holly had just confirmed her coconut yak chew subscription. The agent asked whether the next shipment should change, learned she has shih tzus, asked how old they are and heard the chews were the right size before mentioning a 10% code for a future order.
    AI agent

Perfect. Then you're all set. If anything ever looks off with the next shipment, quantity, timing, or flavor, just call us and we'll fix it fast. Anything you want your next coconut yak chew shipment to be better at, longer lasting, a different size, or are they perfect as is?

    Shopper

Perfect as is. I have shih tzus.

    AI agent

Love it. Shih tzus are usually perfect for yak chews at that pace. About how old are yours?

    Shopper

One year and two and a half. A little over one year. Yeah it's the right size. It's not too big and it's not too little.

    AI agent

Awesome. That's exactly what we want. If everything's perfect, everything's good to go.

    AI agent

Perfect. Then I'll get out of your hair. If you ever do need a backup, we've got a 10% off code for a future order. Loop 10. L as in Lima, O as in Oscar, O as in Oscar, P as in Papa, 1, 0. Can you repeat that back to me just so I know it came through clearly?

    Shopper

    Loop 10.

    AI agent

    Perfect. Loop 10.

    Shopper

Thank you. Nice of you. Thank you.

    AI agent

Of course, Holly. Have a great day and give those shih tzus a little scratch for me.

What dog owners ask, and how the agent replies

    What shoppers say

“He's a power chewer. Will this last?”

    How the agent answers

It answers from your sizing guide: the length or thickness your guide matches to the dog's weight and chewing style. It won't call any chew indestructible, and it repeats your supervision advice rather than skipping it.

    What shoppers say

“Do I have to sign up for a subscription?”

    How the agent answers

It says whether a one-time purchase is available and where the choice sits at checkout. For a subscription, it states the cadence, the price and how to cancel, from your terms.

    What shoppers say

“I can get these cheaper on Amazon.”

    How the agent answers

It compares what your listing states, such as count, size and where the chews come from, without running down other sellers. A code comes up only if you've set one for the second call; otherwise it doesn't haggle.

    What shoppers say

“Will these help with his teeth?”

    How the agent answers

It describes the product the way your listing does and stops there. Saying a chew prevents gum disease is the kind of claim FDA says can make a product an animal drug, so dental and other health questions go to the owner's vet.

    What shoppers say

    “Where are these made?”

    How the agent answers

It reads the origin wording from your label and listing as written. An unqualified "Made in USA" is only for products all or virtually all made here, so the agent never shortens "packed in the USA" into it.

    Setup for a pet store

    1. Connect Shopify or WooCommerce so the agent can read your products, orders and abandoned checkouts, or send order and cart events from Checkout Champ. Each workspace holds one storefront, so a second brand needs a workspace of its own.

    2. Fill the knowledge base with your sizing guide by dog weight and chewing style, ingredient and origin pages, supervision advice, subscription terms and what shipping protection covers. After week one, read the answer gaps list for questions it missed, such as the youngest age for each chew.

    3. Set the cart value branch at the minimum suggested from your results, and pick the Shopify code the second recovery call may offer.

    4. For failed renewals, settle the list's source before you build the flow. A subscription app with a Zapier trigger keeps it current on its own; a CSV upload is a one-off.

    5. Write a custom guardrail such as "Talk about size, texture, ingredients and taste only. Make no claim that a chew treats, cures or prevents disease; health questions go to the vet." The built-in escalation for medical questions stays on behind it.

    6. Cap calls per customer on each agent so a monthly reorderer isn't called after every order, and confirm consent for AI calls with our calling rules guide. Calls go out only within your calling hours, in each owner's local time.

    7. Run the confused customer persona in the simulator, then one you write: the owner of a 90-pound shepherd who wants the longest-lasting chew and no subscription.

    Claims and subscription rules

    • FDA says claims that a pet product will cure, treat, prevent or mitigate disease can indicate it's being offered as a new animal drug, and such claims need approval through the new animal drug process before they can appear on a label. Products sold as supplements for animals get no special category either: FDA regulates them as animal food or animal drugs, depending on ingredients and intended use. Keep the agent to size, texture, ingredients and taste, and route anything about illness to the owner's vet.
    • For subscriptions sold online that renew automatically, the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (15 U.S.C. 8403) sets three conditions for charging: disclose all material terms before collecting billing information, get express informed consent before the charge, and give a simple way to stop recurring charges. On a call, the agent states the terms from your policy and tells anyone who wants to cancel how. Confirm your checkout wording with counsel.
    • Origin claims have their own standard: an unqualified "Made in USA" needs a product that is "all or virtually all" made in the U.S., and the FTC applies that standard to marketing beyond labels. If your chews are sourced abroad, give the agent your exact qualified wording and nothing shorter.

    Questions

Is a call worth it on a small pet supply order?

Often not. On monthly billing, an answered conversation costs about $0.95 to $1.49, according to Loop Voice's cost calculator, and the pricing page says Loop Voice works best for Shopify stores with a $50+ average order value. A single bag of treats is better served by the text; save calls for multi-packs.

Can the agent move a pet subscription to a one-time order?

It walks the owner to the one-time option at checkout. On Pamela's recorded call, she didn't want a monthly plan; the agent explained that with a one-time purchase she'd be "charged once" with no automatic monthly renewals, and her order went through.

What do the six recorded pet store calls show?

All six are for one pet chew store and sit in the call library. Lisa and Pamela chose one-time purchases, Maria applied a code the agent spelled out, Ruth turned off an optional shipping protection add-on, Holly confirmed her subscription, and Leon got a wrong order replaced.

Can the agent recommend a chew for a puppy?

Only what your guide says about puppies, such as the youngest age you suggest for each chew. Questions about teething pain, swallowing or a sensitive stomach go to the vet, and the agent should say so plainly.

Should pet stores run win-back calls?

If your products run out on a schedule, yes, as a campaign to customers past their usual reorder gap. There's no win-back baseline yet: the September 2026 benchmark had no win-back enrolments. Count your own instead: how many owners pick up, how many reorder inside your attribution window, and how many ask not to be called again.
